Description:

The metropolitan Boston region is home to over 100 species of edible wild plants, some of which are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts (including common farm and garden weeds like Dandelion, Wild Mustard, Purslane and Lamb’s Quarters). Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author, on an evening ramble in and around Blue Heron Organic Farm in Lincoln to learn about at least two dozen edible species.

As each species is encountered, Russ will present information on identification tips, edible portion(s), season(s) of availability and preparation methods.  Russ will also provide general guidelines for safe and environmentally-responsible foraging.  There will also be opportunities to gather wild edibles at this event, so bring your collecting bags and baskets.

About the Instructor:

Russ CohenUntil his retirement in June of 2015, Russ Cohen’s “day job” was serving as the Rivers Advocate for the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration, where he had worked since 1988, and where one of his areas of expertise was in riparian vegetation. Now Russ has more time to pursue his passionate avocation, which is connecting to nature via his taste buds. He is an expert forager and the author of Wild Plants I Have Known… and Eaten, published in 2004 by the Essex County Greenbelt Association and now in its sixth printing. Russ has been teaching about wild edibles since 1974 and conducts over three dozen foraging walks and talks each year at a wide variety of venues throughout the Northeast.
