Why Do an Internship?

Working as an intern or apprentice on an organic farm is one of the best ways to learn about organic farming. It can be a mutually beneficial arrangement for farmer and intern alike. The organizations on this list connect farmers with interns. Send a SASE or call well in advance of the growing season to receive information.

Farmers and interns often have different ideas about the amount of work required, time spent on education and training, and issues like housing and compensation. Coming to an agreement at the beginning of the internship can avoid many problems further down the road. Several organizations have written guidelines for farmer/internship agreements, including many listed below.

Additionally, see our opportunities available for working with sustainable agriculture organizations.

Call ahead and set up a time to spend some time in the field with us and do a working interview.

This year we will raise meat chickens, layers for eggs, pigs for meat and lard, and turkeys. We also have some non-certified young male dairy calves on pasture. We have an orchard, a lot of small fruit, and have a small wedding flower business. We sell garlic for seed.

Under the auspices of the MHSC we work with former prisoners inviting residents of halfway houses to volunteer regularly and employ former prisoners on our farm. We also run a number of educational workshops on the farm each year.

Conserved in 1995 with the Vermont Land Trust, this 300-acre certified-organic farm in Highgate, Vermont, is home to Hannah and Eric Noel's beef herd and vegetable CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). Hannah, a graduate of Smith College, is a certified teacher, and has always had her hands in the soil, having started her first garden in her sandbox as a little girl. Eric, aka the "Organic Mechanic" has a passion for both farming and racecars. He grew up on the farm and received his degree in automotive repair from Vermont Technical College. After working as a racecar mechanic in the Indy Car Series, Eric returned to the farm with plans to diversify and continue his parent's land stewardship. He was trained in Holistic Management Planned Grazing by his local farm mentor and certified instructor, Abe Collins of Cimarron Farm in St Albans, Vermont. Eric and Hannah were married on the farm and home-birthed both of their children, Madeleine and Calvin. We farm full-time. We grow about 40 different vegetables, small fruits, herbs, and cut flowers on about 2 acres. We are somewhat mechanized and will be more so in 2011 with the purchase of our first tractor with cultivators. We have a 60 head Galloway beef herd. The calves are born on pasture in spring and summer and remain with their mothers throughout their lives. We raise hens on pasture in a moveable coop. We also produce salsa and lacto-fermented sauerkraut in the late summer and fall. We primarily market our foods through a CSA model. We sell our beef directly to the consumer and also to local health food stores. We also sell other local foods through our CSA including cheese, chicken, bread, sunflower oil, and popcorn.

Intern will primarily work in our vegetable gardens in which we grow food for our 75 member CSA. Intern must be able to lift 50 pounds and work long days outside in all conditions. Daily chores outside of the gardens are shared. We are also seeking one intern who is interested in working with our cattle, learning low-stress animal handling and Holistic Management Planned Grazing in addition to working in the gardens. Weekly Wage of $25. Housing on farm. Separate intern house with bath and kitchen. We still offer shared meals. All meals provided including days off. All organic. We have two young children. Interns share dish washing and chicken chores (each intern takes two days a week). I am willing to provide vegetarian alternatives. We prefer no smoking, no drugs on the farm and no drinking during work hours. We have weekly meetings where we plan and have question and answer sessions. We offer additional reading and reading assignments for anyone interested in working with the cattle. We will work side-by side in the field. We also pay for NOFA workshops and field trips to other farms in our area and will pay for and transport you to the NOFA Summer Conference in Massachusetts in August.

Martha's Vineyard Farm Apprentice Cooperative (Updated for 2011)
Emily Palmer, Jefferson Monroe, Richard Andre
PO Box 1760
Vineyard Haven, MA 02568
mvfarmapprentice@gmail.com

We are three independent small farmers, growing and living on Martha's Vineyard. Jeff raises pastured poultry and operates a mobile poultry processing unit. Richard raises pastured poultry, as well as pigs and a flock of laying hens. Richard is also responsible for the advocacy of licensed local meat production with federal, state and local officials. Emily raises a wide variety of organic vegetables and cut flowers. The essential idea behind our collaboration is this - we are all expanding our businesses and are in need of help, but none of us are big enough to warrant having someone full time, so we've decided to pool our resources to hire, house, and train apprentices. This apprenticeship is pretty unique in that you will get to experience three different farms in a season, and you will get to see a lot of what it takes to start from scratch - we are all working properties that were not farms when we came to them, and have built what we have from the ground up. Apprentices will spend two days a week with Jeff at the Good Farm, two days a week at Bakehouse Farm with me, and one day a week at Cleveland Farm with Richard.

Our season runs May 15 to Oct 30. Apprentices must be able to commit to the full season. Cash stipend, food stipend, and housing in the area will be provided in exchange for a five day work week. We take our commitment to apprentice education seriously and will provide a reading curriculum, biweekly discussion meetings, and monthly visits to other area farms. Experience is not as important to us as enthusiasm, strong desire to learn, and a willingness to do repetitive physical labor in all kinds of weather. Applicants must also be willing to participate in on-farm poultry processing - at the height of the season, we will be processing over two hundred birds a week. A more complete job description is available via email. Anyone with a serious interest in professional sustainable farming and the physical ability to do the work will be considered. Please send a brief introduction and resume to mvfarmapprentice@gmail.com for further information.

At present we have about 7 acres under cultivation in mixed vegetables, berries, and herbs, or green manure and forage crops. Simple farm construction, and innovative projects abound. Food preservation, holistic farm management, and starting a farm business / lifestyle are possibilities to explore. In addition to education on the farm, we encourage participation in the CRAFT program. This is a network of area farms that have apprentices and offer extended learning opportunities through a schedule of rotating on-farm tours and seminars on specific topics.

Two apprentices are taken on March-December. We also take a third apprentice for June-September for help with the busiest season on the farm. Teamster training is not included for this position. Accommodations are rustic and small, but also very peaceful and grounding. All farm-raised produce plus staples are provided in addition to a monthly stipend. Simple Gifts Farm (Updated for 2012)
Jeremy Barker Plotkin
P.O. Box 9631
North Amherst, MA 01059
(413)549-1585
jbp@the-spa.com

Simple Gifts Farm is a small, diverse market farm located in Western Massachusetts. We market most of our crops through a 300-member CSA program, along with vending at the Amherst Farmer's Market. While vegetables are the main crop, we also integrate livestock into our production system, producing meat and eggs, but perhaps more importantly, building soil fertility for the vegetable operation. Much of the vegetable operation is mechanized, though most of the harvesting occurs by hand. We grow dozens of crops, but have worked to put them into only a few basic production systems in order to streamline. We also have season-extension hoophouses and a greenhouse heated by used vegetable oil and solar hot-water that is used to produce early crops for farmer's markets and some greens for sale during the winter, both through a winter share program, and through a new winter farmer's market. We are also working to increase our supply of winter produce by canning and freezing summer vegetables through a few different co-packers.

The livestock operation is still in a rapid growth phase. We have about 250 organic laying hens which are rotationally grazed on pasture. Our swine herd has recently expanded to include a boar and sows, so that we can farrow our own piglets on the farm. We have also recently added a mixed herd of Scottish Highlander, Galloway, and Angus beef cattle, and will have our first lambs born on the farm in spring of 2011. All of the livestock are grazed on a section of vegetable land which is rotated out of production for a season, as well as on crop aftermath, and on a neighboring parcel which we have recently leased

We are seeking five interns to work from April 1st to Thanksgiving. There will be the option of extending into late November or even December for several of the interns. The work week consists of approximately 50 hours, with 9-hour days on weekdays, and rotating Saturday market days, weekend chore duty and evening weekday CSA staffing. We start work as early as 6 A.M., especially during the heat of summer,. Work outside of normal work hours will be required for some projects. For example, the apprentices are responsible on a rotating basis for greenhouse and livestock chores, including weekends. There are also be regular evening times when interns will mind the CSA distribution or the farm stand.

The apprentices will be housed at the site, in a historic farmhouse. The farm site is in Amherst, within walking distance to conservation land, a swimming hole, restaurants and other businesses. Downtown Amherst is an easy bike or bus ride away and hosts a plethora of cultural activities. Apprentices will be responsible for whatever food they need in addition to the bounty of vegetables produced at the farm. Farm meat and eggs will available at reduced price, along with several local food products that we sell to the CSA members

A stipend of $600/ month will be paid to the apprentices. Worker's compensation will be provided; health insurance is provided through the Massachusetts state program. A higher stipend may be negotiable for applicants with at least one full season's prior farm experience.

The apprenticeship is best viewed as a work-training program, rather than an exclusively "educational" experience. Apprentices will mostly learn through working on projects and through taking on responsibilities for managing aspects of the farm. The fact that we are a small and relatively young operation means that apprentices remain very close to the decision-making process, and will be assigned independent work assignments as they demonstrate ability to complete them well. Apprentices will find that they will gain the most if they show initiative, attention to detail, a good work ethic and the ability to know when to ask for help. Strong communications skills are also an important part of prospering within a small hardworking group such as we have at the farm. Being small also means that we all end up doing almost everything; so apprentices will be exposed to a diverse array of activities. Apprentices are given semi-independent projects in the area of marketing, mechanical work, and crop pest management. This allows people to take a sense of ownership in one facet of the larger whole. Tractor work will be one of the apprentice's responsibilities.

We are members of the CRAFT program, which brings apprentices to nearby farms for farm visits on a biweekly basis.

Positions will be filled on a rolling basis. Please send a resume and a list of at least three work references. We will contact candidates by phone or email to arrange an interview. Farm visits are strongly recommended, though phone interviews can work for those living further away.

The skills taught during the apprenticeship can be translated to a wide range of future activities: from intensive small scale gardening to larger scale production. After a season here apprentices will have a realistic understanding of what it takes to plan, grow, and market produce and cut flowers commercially. Most of your learning will take place in the field. Our method of teaching is: "I do. We do. You do." We will work together moving from demonstration of skills, doing them side by side, and then to independent work. Once a skill is mastered apprentices are expected to work to improve efficiency and speed as they are important skills for commercial growing. During July and August we are very production oriented but are often discussing the details of crops and farming as we work and questions arise. Orientation, farm walks, daily meetings, and in-depth discussions of topics of interest are other times scheduled for learning.

The Work Schedule
The season: May 1st through the third week of October. Weekly work requirements: 40 hours/week Tuesday-Saturday. Eight hours per day starting between 6:30 and 8 am depending on the weather. Housing and stipend provided.

General Work
We focus on high quality, high value products so attention to detail is very important in our harvesting, washing, and processing of crops. Work tasks often require repetition, bending, lifting, and carrying heavy objects. Most farm work is done using hand tools and techniques. Apprentices are expected to have a professional, polite, and helpful attitude during work and when interacting with customers.

CEFS was the result of several years of work by a task force of university faculty and administrators, state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, farmers, and citizens charged with developing a strategy to build a strong sustainable agriculture program in North Carolina. CEFS began its sustainable agriculture programming, including work at the Cherry Research Farm near Goldsboro, in 1996. Today, CEFS is one of the nation's largest centers for the study of environmentally sustainable farming practices.

The CEFS Small Farm Unit has become an integral part of the Goldsboro community through program partnerships. Apprentices will play a major role in continuing to develop these community connections by participation in ag literacy opportunities such as our Discover Ag program and in outreach to the Goldsboro community through the Wayne Food Initiative partnership, community gardens and farmers markets. Apprentices will work closely with the Small Farm Unit Manager and the Community Food Systems Outreach Coordinator as well as the local Wayne County Cooperative Extension Center and the Wayne County community to develop expertise in the above focus areas. The Small Farm Unit Apprenticeship program seeks to offer a diverse experience that will allow learners to engage in a broad, hands-on learning adventure! Apprentices will engage in the following learning topics: Fundamentals of Ag Production - Experience a full production year, from spring planting (February) to fall harvest (October); - Including season extension with high tunnels and a small greenhouse. - Organic production certification and GAP food safety standards; - Small farm financial management including record keeping and enterprise budgets. - Small scale production of vegetables, fruits, transplants, cover crops and livestock including bees; - Soil science, integrated pest and weed management; - Issues of sustainability will be highlighted throughout - Including topics such as energy and water use. - Hands-on involvement with University based field research conducted at the Small Farm Unit and other units. Community Food Systems - Community development and engagement; - Food security; - Localization; - Youth and community programming; - Grant writing for small farmers and nonprofits and community project funding; - Opportunities to work with summer interns; - Assist communities to understand their resources, their choices and their partners. Education, Extension and Outreach - Assist with the elementary school level Discover Ag youth program; - Assist with the many visitor tours at CEFS and the Small Farm Unit; - Participate in and assist with educational programs at the Small Farm Unit and on other CEFS units including the CEFS Seasons of Sustainable Agriculture (SOSA); - Develop SFU news updates and monthly blogs; - Provide leadership during the summer internship program at CEFS. There a total of 4 apprenticeship programs available. Summer apprenticeships are from February through October. A winter apprenticeship is available from October through January. During the apprenticeship, independent projects are encouraged. We offer a small stipend ($100/week), housing with access to a kitchen, and the Internet.
