2010 Directory of Organic Farming Apprenticeship Programs
Here are the 2010 listings for apprenticeships on Massachusetts Organic Farms, followed by listings for national and
international farms. If you know of an intern opening for this listing,
Please follow this link and use the form. Any questions email the webmaster at NOFA/Mass.
Why Do an Internship?
Working as an intern or apprentice on an organic farm is one of the best ways to learn about organic farming. It can be a mutually beneficial arrangement for farmer and intern alike. The organizations on this list connect farmers with interns. Send a SASE or call well in advance of the growing season to receive information.
Farmers and interns often have different ideas about the amount of work required, time spent on education and training, and issues like housing and compensation. Coming to an agreement at the beginning of the internship can avoid many problems further down the road. Several organizations have written guidelines for farmer/internship agreements, including many listed below.
Additionally, see our opportunities available for working with sustainable agriculture organizations.

food they help grow. In the field, apprentices work closely with the Crops

grow a variety of veggies, fruit and flowers. Apprentices also gain
management experience as they help organize volunteer, school and summer

Description of Farm:
Food Bank Farm is an established organic farm on flat, fertile silt loam
soils in the Pioneer River valley. The area offers numerous cultural and
natural amenities, including performances at five area colleges, hikes
in the nearby Holyoke Range and the Berkshires, and lunchtime swimming
in the Connecticut River. With more than 675 shareholders, Food Bank
Farm is one of the largest and most successful CSA farms in the country.
While providing premium organic produce to its shareholders, the farm
also donates 40-50% of its production to the non-profit Western
Massachusetts Food Bank, with over a million pounds donated since 1992.
The farm is highly diversified, growing dozens of different vegetables,
flowers, and small fruits. There is a strong emphasis on the development
and refinement of efficient management systems. Many harvest and weed
management systems developed here are being replicated on CSAs
throughout the country. Michael Docter also operates CSAWorks, which
provides technical assistance to start-up growers.
General Internship/Apprenticeship Information:
Internship starts: April/May
Internship ends: December 15
Details about Internship/Apprenticeship:
Typically four apprentices needed in any given year. Experience with
vegetables and/or small farm equipment a plus, but not required. We are
constantly shifting tasks, but the ability to perform repetitive work
steadily, efficiently, and with a positive attitude is essential. We
believe that it's possible to be both hardworking and easygoing (we like
to think we are!). Applicants must be in good physical condition and
able to work outdoors in any weather.
Apprentices will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of
the farm's operation, from planning and land preparation to harvesting
and planting of cover crops. Each apprentice is asked to take primary
responsibility for the maintenance, repair, and operation of one of the
farm's tractors. Each apprentice is also encouraged to take special
responsibility in an area of special interest, e.g., planting of cover
crops, season extension.
After working at the Food Bank Farm for 3-4 seasons many apprentices go
on to start their own successful farming operations.
Stipend is $700-1200/mo. commensurate with experience. Room and board
are included. Apprentices live in one wing of a large, renovated
18th-century farmhouse. All utilities provided, except phone.
Apprentices have free access to the farm's products.
Beginning date is variable. Apprentices have the option of 1) a full
season apprenticeship (April or May to December 15), or a summer season
'planting' apprenticeship (May 10 to June 10).
Prospective apprentices should contact us between early December and
late March. Contacts after April are welcome for the following year or
short term positions.
This is a fast paced and exciting opportunity for the right person. If
you like to work hard, you work well in groups and you like to have fun,
contact us at Foodbankfarm@yahoo.com

We grow a wide variety of crops to supply our farm stand, the Cohasset farmers' market and a few local restaurants. Our land is a quarter mile from the beach, is a short bike ride's distance from town and includes about 120 acres of conservation woodlands so there is plenty to do with time off. Prior farming or gardening and tractor experience would be great but is not required. Must not be shy of responsibility, capable of working alone, but also enjoy working together with others.
This is a great opportunity for a hardworking individual looking to gain skills and knowledge in all aspects of small-scale, organic farming including all types of field work, greenhouse management, making compost, facility maintenance, marketing and the ins and outs of what it means to be USDA certified organic. Our intern would work closely with the farm managers and become an integral part of the operation of the farm. The intern works five long days a week, with Sunday and Monday off. We also have a non-profit, educational component to the farm, so the farm intern could also gain experience in educating children about gardening and farming, if interested.
We would allow time and encourage our intern to attend the Northeast Organic Farmers Association summer conference. Compensation is $150/ week with a raise half way through, and a bonus for staying through to the end of your commitment.

csa@naturalroots.com
In 2008 Natural Roots begins its eleventh season here at the farm in Conway. We are a diversified small family farm. At present we have about 7 acres under cultivation in mixed vegetables, berries, and herbs, or green manure and forage crops. Our produce is marketed exclusively through our CSA of about 185 families, with surplus donated to local people in need. We raise a flock of sheep which yields meat, sheepskins, and spinning fleeces which are processed into dyed and natural colored yarn. We also keep a small flock chickens for egg production and for meat for the farm crew. Our four workhorses are the only source of power for all of the field and woods work. Workdays are very full and rewarding – 5 and 1/2 days per week. Basic workhorse care, handling, driving, and fieldwork are a major component of the apprenticeship. Daily animal chores, pasture fence moving, and animal herding on a regular basis. Crop cultural tasks including seeding, weeding, trellising, mulching, harvesting, and washing happen continuously throughout the season. Staffing our CSA distributions involves assisting customers, stocking produce, and conducting retail sales in our shop. Hay and straw making seasonally. Equipment repair and maintenance are important regular responsibilities. Management of our wood-heated greenhouse, soil fertility, extensive cover cropping, weed control, field rotations, and livestock health are important aspects of the apprenticeship as well. Simple farm construction, and innovative projects abound; food preservation, holistic farm management, and starting a farm business / lifestyle are integral parts of the experience. In addition to education on the farm, we encourage participation in the CRAFT program. This is a network of area farms which all have apprentices and offer extended learning opportunities through a schedule of rotating on-farm tours and seminars on specific topics.
Three apprentices are sought from March to December. Accommodations include two small rustic cabins. All farm-raised produce plus staples are provided in addition to a stipend of $600 per month, plus bonus. Worker’s Compensation is also provided as well as many locally available basic health services free to farm workers.
The farm is situated in the beautiful Eastern foothills of the Berkshire Mountains on the edge of the Pioneer valley. There are limitless outdoor recreational opportunities right out the backdoor (literally) as well as a wealth of cultural resources within thirty minutes drive.
Please respond to our application questions and send with your resume, and three references. After receiving your application we may contact you to set up a farm visit.

Newton Community Farm is a 2.25 acre intensive market garden. Our
growing methods employ elements of biointensive agriculture and
permaculture. We run a 77 member CSA, sell at a weekly farmers' market, run
a 5-day/week farm stand, and supply vegetables to our local food pantry. We
have an educational mission focused on re-acquainting people with
traditional food knowledge and encouraging home gardens and fruit
production.
This internship provides an opportunity for you to learn about
intensive, small-scale growing in an urbanized setting. You'll be involved
in all aspects of the farm operation and gain first-hand insight into how to
maximize both yield and profitability when working small acreage. Applicants
should have a strong desire to share their knowledge, as the intern will be
expected to work with the public, supervising them in daily farm tasks.
Knowledge of farming or gardening is desirable, but less important than
enthusiasm and a strong desire to engage whole-heartedly with the job. We
are a public farm, so good communication skills and a desire to work with
people of all ages are very important. Our intensive growing methods require
workers who are able to work hard and fast, but also with good attention to
details. Selling at the farmers' market is a possibility so a valid drivers
license is necessary. Ability to drive a manual transmission helpful. You
should be in good physical health, capable of lifting 50 lbs, and able to
spend time bending and kneeling. The internship runs for 30 weeks, from
mid-April through October. Our work week is roughly 8-4:30 Tuesday through
Saturday. We pay $325/week plus food from the farm. We do not have housing,
but can offer assistance in finding local housing.

Picadilly Farm is a family farm, begun and run by Jenny and Bruce Wooster in 2006. We're located on 71 acres of rural farmland in southwest New Hampshire, with 40 tillable acres of fine sandy loam. The farm is in the Connecticut River valley, just over the state line from MA, 20 minutes from Brattleboro VT, and half an hour from both Greenfield MA and Keene NH.
Apprentices are involved in many aspects of running our farm. Apprentices work in the greenhouse and learn about its operation. Apprentices assist in all of the fieldwork, including planting, weeding, hoeing, harvesting and irrigation tasks. Apprentices typically become skilled in the use and maintenance of one of the farm tractors, and are taught about the use of much of the other farm equipment. Over time, apprentices take increasing responsibility for managing the harvests, plus post-harvest handling, and CSA distribution at the farm. Apprentices also have ample opportunities to participate in record-keeping and planning. In the spring, we compile a packet for each apprentice, with much of the information about our farm (budget, business plan, marketing plans, crop plans, etc) included.
The apprentice schedule runs from April 1 through the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. An extended apprenticeship into the winter is also possible. The work week is 5 days (either M-F or TU-SAT), with work from 6am to 5pm. We offer a monthly stipend of $900, plus a room in our crew house located less than a mile from the farm.
In 2010, we'll work with an assistant manager, 3-4 field workers (mostly Spanish-speaking) and 2 apprentices. We sell our produce through our on-farm and delivered CSA shares, to a buying co-operative of 350 households, and to several other regional CSA's. We'll grow 25-30 acres of mixed vegetables, plus a growing livestock operation consisting of 3 lambs, 6 pigs, and laying hens.
For more information, please contact us at the farm. To apply for an apprenticeship, please send along a resume, references, and a letter telling us what you're looking for in an apprenticeship. We like to meet prospective apprentices for a visit at the farm if possible.

Apprentice positions filled for 2010. Thanks for your interest.
Sidehill Farm is a small-scale dairy and vegetable farm in the
foothills of the Berkshire mountains. Our mission is to produce the
healthiest, best-tasting raw milk, yogurt, fruit, and vegetables
available by focusing on a total picture of health - of our
customers, our cows, our crops, the local working rural landscape,
and the robust biological and human community within which we all
thrive.
Our dairy is seasonal, milking approximately 15 cows from March until
Thanksgiving. The cows are rotationally grazed during the pasture
season, and eat hay and haylage through the winter. We also have 3
acres in vegetables and herbs, and two large greenhouses for
tomatoes, basil, vegetable seedlings, and winter salad greens. Raw
milk is sold at the farm, vegetables are sold at farmers markets and
a weekly farm pickup, and yogurt is sold at all three, plus wholesale
to local retailers.
Sidehill Farm is looking to fill three positions for the 2009: one
assistant manager apprentice for vegetable crops; one assistant
manager apprentice for the dairy, and one field apprentice with
shared responsibility for dairy and vegetables. Assistant manager
apprentices will have some responsibility for both dairy and
vegetables.
The Assistant Manager apprenticeships are positions for people who
have 1-2 years of experience, and feel that they want to take on more
responsibility than a field internship. They will work closely with
Amy and Paul, but should also be able to work effectively alone, and
direct other people. The vegetable apprentice will be primarily
responsible for greenhouse work, transplanting, seeding, cultivation,
harvesting, cover cropping, compost making, and washing and packing
orders. Additionally, there will be some farmer's market
responsibilities and a share of animal chores. The dairy apprentice
will be primarily responsible for milking, herd health, fence moving,
pasture clipping, and barn chores. Approximately 20% of their
workweek will also be on the vegetable farm, with possible farmers
market time. The positions run from March or April through November.
Stipend is $600/month, plus housing, one group meal per day, milk,
yogurt, and veggies from the farm.
The field apprentice will split their time between the vegetables and
the dairy. Responsibilites will include helping with the tasks
described above, as well as independent milking shifts. The position
runs from March or April through October or November. Stipend for the
field apprentice is $400 per month, plus housing, one group meal per

Nestled in the hills of Sutton, MA in southern Worcester County,
we currently grow a variety of vegetables, eggs, broilers and turkeys using
sustainable and chemical free methods. We are part of a multi farmer CSA,
Stone's Throw CSA which uses our farm for distribution. We also sell at a
number of farmers markets and have PYO strawberries (not chemical free but
cultivated using the IPM program) and pumpkins. We are located near
Purgatory Chasm and the mid State Trail. The farm is studying
Re-Mineralization techniques as taught by Dan Kittredge of the Real Food
Project to increase soil health and food nutrition. Part of the farm is
rented out to a refugee incubator farm project run by the Lutheran Social
Services, offering the opportunity to see farming techniques used in other
parts of the world.
Silvermine Farm is looking for several interns for our Certified
Naturally Grown farm for the 2010 season. We are looking for people ready to
live in a dynamic community with open minds and a positive outlook to join
us in the daily cultivation of healthy soils and nutrient dense food.
Applicants must be able to work in all types of weather and in physically
demanding conditions. A good sense of humor is always appreciated along
with a good work ethic. Experience is valued, but not necessary, just a
willingness to learn and participate. The period of time interns are needed
for is from early April through mid November, and part time interns on the
farm are possible. Interns will have the opportunity to work in the varied
aspects of farm life, soil preparation, weeding, cultivation by hand, small
tools and tractor, planting, insect control, greenhouse cultivation, chicken
raising (for both meat and eggs), farmers markets sales, interacting with
PYO customers and CSA shareholders and record keeping. Shared rooming in
either a trailer (next to the house) or in the farmhouse itself and shared
household responsibilities. Meals are included with the housing, in a shared
family setting. Everyone is expected to help with meal preparation, and
meals are taken together as a group (with the exception of breakfast which
everyone prepares for themselves and occasionally eat together). We have
hosted an eclectic bunch of eating preferences through the years, vegan,
vegetarian, food allergies, omnivores, and carnivores who think vegetables
are interesting but suspect. Everyone in the household is expected to
respect and accommodate the community's varied eating choices. A stipend
(based on length of internship and experience) is available. Social Security
and Medicare contributions will be matched by the employer and Workers'
Compensation is provided. Educational opportunities are also available and
may include participation in the EMASSCRAFT workshops. For more information
about our farm and employment opportunities, visit our web site at
www.silverminefarm.com. Interested applicants should send an email to
martha@silverminefarm.com which describes why they are interested, what they
hope to get out of the experience and what they have to offer. References
and the applicant's job history should be included.

South River Flowers

Our farm is small. We grow 1-acre of cutflowers for market, plus
lots of vegetables for our family. We work mostly with our hands, but also
use the rototiller for managing cover crops. We also have chickens and
are in the process of planting fruit trees. We are also using
permaculture principles for re-vegetating a damaged site.
Primary responsibilities include all areas of garden work
involved in growing cut flowers and vegetables. Also, harvesting flowers
for market, and tree care. Depending on your interest, you may want to be
involved with arranging flowers for special events, construction
projects, or season extension experiments. In past years, I have
considered this position more of a work-trade, and less of an
apprenticeship, and only required experienced people to work 10 hours/week
in exchange for living in our yurt for the season. Also part of the
trade has been: garden space (plus tools and greenhouse space, etc.) for
your own growing; and garden veggies, information sharing, and some
meal-sharing. If someone were particularly interested in cutflower
production (small scale), I would be willing to work with them in more of
a learning relationship. This situation is very flexible, so if you are at
all interested, contact me. We are also interested in people with
construction skills or childcare skills, although garden work is primary.

Waltham Fields Community Farm seeks members for our 2010 hourly
Weed Crew. WFCF grows diversified vegetables using organic production
methods on eleven acres of land. In addition to growing for a 350-share
summer CSA and 150-share winter CSA, we set out to distribute $40,000 of
food annually through various hunger relief and food access programs. As an
urban farm just outside of Boston, we provide thousands of individuals the
chance to experience a local farm and local food.
The 4 person Weed Crew will focus mainly on hoeing and
hand-weeding. Crew members will work mornings, Monday-Friday, 20 hours per
week, for 12 weeks. Traditionally, our weed crew is often working side by
side with WFCF volunteers. This position suits someone who can work well in
a large group setting but is also able to maintain motivation and focus in a
smaller working group as well. Dates: June 1 to August 20. Ability to
commit to full 12 week period required. Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 am-Noon
Compensation: $10/hr plus some produce from the farm. Qualifications: We
seek individuals who are mature, enthusiastic and able to do fast-paced,
detail-oriented physical work, who love to be outside, and who don't mind
getting dirty. A sense of humor is a definite plus. Applicants should be
able to sustain focus through repetitive tasks, work outside in all weather
conditions and not mind getting dirty. Crew members will be trained on
proper techniques and approaches to all tasks, so previous experience is not
required but attention to detail and dedication to work are important
qualities. An on-farm interview is required. To apply, please send a
resume & brief cover letter. Applications and questions can be sent to
assistant farm manager Erinn Roberts at erinn@communityfarms.org.
