2009 NOFA/Massachusetts CSA listings
Community
Supported Agriculture is a way for people living apart from a farm to have an
on-farm experience. Members of a CSA buy shares in a farm, and receive a
certain amount of fresh, locally grown food every week. At some farms each
share member is asked to work on the farm; at others the work requirement is
optional or nonexistent. In any case, share members not only get organically
grown produce from NOFA farmers, but support organic farmers by assuring them
of a certain level of income for the year.
If you have a CSA and would like to see it listed here, please follow this link and use the form to submit your CSA.
For a more comprehensive list of CSAs in other states, please check out the
list compiled by Robyn van En Center at Wilson College.

CSA (community supported agriculture) is a program designed to
help farms sell their crops in advance to ensure the viability of their
operation. This program benefits the farmer, the supporter and the general
public. The program enables the farmer to receive enough money up front in
order to help finance their farming operations. It also helps the farmer
market his/her crops and help eliminate any uncertainties. It benefits the
supporter by ensuring that they will receive in most cases a better value
for their money that they fronted. Also, the supporter is guaranteed the
freshest, safest and best tasting produce available anywhere. Finally, it
benefits the general public by protecting the existence of local farms. By
supporting local agriculture, you are keeping the local farms viable,
which means that you helping to preserve green space. We will be
offering 100 shares for the 2009 season (first come, first served). Our
CSA program will run for 18 weeks from June 12th through October 10th.
Members will have the choice of picking their produce up either Friday
afternoons or Saturday mornings. The produce that members will receive
should have an estimated value of $30 per week (this can vary from week to
week depending on the weather). As a bonus, members will receive two
complimentary corn maze passes for our new 6 acre corn maze which opens
September 19th. Members will also have the opportunity to cut a
complimentary bouquet of flowers each week from our field starting in mid
July. All of the fruits and vegetables that are grown on our farm are
IPM (Integrated Pest Management). We have practiced IPM on our farm for
over a decade and consider it to be the safest method of producing crops.
We also were one of the first farms in the state to sign up with the
"Partners With Nature" program. IPM ensures the consumer safe produce
while also protecting the environment. Our IPM consultant carefully
monitors pest activity in our various crops by using pheromone and sticky
traps to determine exactly when to spray. When our consultant determines
that the insect levels are above a certain threshold, we will then spray,
using only the safest materials available. Our consultant also monitors
disease and nutrient levels by using soil tests and tissue culture
analysis. As a result of this practice, we are not over fertilizing our
crops, thus minimizing the potential risk of polluting ground water.
What do we grow? This year, we have a wide variety of fruits and
vegetables to offer our members. Please know that we try to choose the
varieties that have the best possible flavor. We have raspberries,
blackberries, blueberries, peaches (yellow), peaches (white), apples,
lettuce, swiss chard, herbs (all types), sweet corn, beefsteak tomatoes,
cherry tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, plum tomatoes, peppers (all types),

Stone's Throw CSA
Martha Cole

Sutton, MA 01590

info@stonesthrowcsa.org
Stone's Throw CSA is a multi farmer CSA with three farms
currently participating; Sweet Birch Farm in Douglas, MA, a farm in
Oxford, MA and Silvermine Farm in Sutton, MA. All of our growers commit to
growing using sustainable agricultural techniques with no artificial
pesticides or chemicals. The number of shares offered for 2009 will be
50. To accommodate this, we will be holding two different distribution
days, Tuesdays and Saturdays from 2 - 7 PM. We will try and accommodate
everyone's first choice for pick up day, but the cooler we use limits the
number of boxes that can be stored at one time. The slots will be filled
on a first come, first served basis. Regular shares for the 20 week
2009 season will be $525 and small shares will be $315. That price
includes a $25 regular share and $15 small share administration charge.
The value of produce planted for our shareholders will be based on $500
per regular share (small shares will contain approximately half of a
regular share) using 2008 prices. As you may or may not know, eating
seasonally means that the variety and amount of produce you get weekly
will vary as crops become more plentiful in the summer. Distribution in
the first three to four weeks or so will be much less than in the height
of summer production. We have learned that this is important information
for first time CSA members!
We currently require shareholders to
materially participate in Stone's Throw CSA, 10 hours per season for
regular shareholders and 6 hours per season for small shareholders. We
will also offer a program where shareholders unable to meet that
obligation will be able to make a donation to have someone else hired to
fulfill that obligation. It is our desire to find youth groups looking for
community service that would benefit from such an arrangement. As far
as the quantity distributed, we set goals as to the amount of each crop to
distribute when we make our crop plans. This is what we ended up
distributing last year in each regular share (small shares received either
half the amount, or didn't get any of a particular crop one week and
received it the following week): June 19th (Week 1) 1 bunch beets 3
oz salad greens 4 oz baby kale 1 head lettuce 1.5 lbs snap peas 1
bunch radishes 3 oz baby spinach 1 pt strawberries August 21st (Week
10) 1 lb snap beans, mixed colors 1.5 lbs broccoli 2 lb cabbage 1.5 lb
carrots 1 head cauliflower .75 lb pickling cucumbers 2 slicing
cucumbers 2 oz salad greens 1 bunch kale 1 lb onions .25 lb hot
peppers .5 lb sweet peppers 2 lbs potatoes 2 lbs summer squash, mixed
varieties 1 pt cherry tomatoes 1.5 lbs plum tomatoes 1.33 lbs slicing
tomatoes October 16th (Week 18) .5 lb snap beans 1 bunch beets 2 lbs
carrots a tiny eggplant 1 bunch kale 1-2 hot peppers 6 oz sweet
peppers 2.5 lbs potatoes 3 lbs winter squash 1 lb rutabaga It is
important to know that our crop plans and the actual amounts distributed
vary from season to season, based on the particular growing conditions we
encounter. Our goal is to provide $500 worth of produce to each regular
share (1/2 that for small shares) based on the prior year's produce
prices. Our shareholders share in crop failures and crop bounties alike.
Also, it is important for you to understand that CSA's provide a very
different eating pattern than grocery stores. Eating in season and locally
grown produce can mean a lot of one crop at a time over an extended period
or just a taste of another crop. Since you don't choose what goes into
your box you need to be willing to be adventurous when it comes to new
vegetables and menu planning. CSA's also work best for a family that cooks
regularly. For a registration form, please visit

World PEAS Cooperative

Lowell, MA 01852
mhimmel@comteam.org
www.nesfp.org
World PEAS (People Enhancing Agricultural Sustainability) is a network of
farmers that have completed agricultural and business training with the New
Entry Sustainable Farming Project (www.nesfp.org). World PEAS farmers hail
from Africa, Asia, North America, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean and
manage small farms near Lowell. Many of these farmers are economically and
socially disadvantaged and have little access to other marketing outlets due
to social, technological and language barriers. In addition to growing
traditional American vegetables, many continue to grow ethnic crops from
their homelands. Over two dozen World PEAS farmers along with other local
farms contribute to our CSA, which is unlike any other. World PEAS farmers
are not certified organic, but use organic and sustainable growing
practices. Additional items are sourced from certified organic farms and
farms that use integrated pest management. By buying a farm share with the
World PEAS CSA, you will get fresh, local and healthy produce, while
supporting the next generation of culturally diverse farmers. Each farm
share includes enough vegetables each week to feed a family of four
omnivores or two vegetarians. Produce is harvested the day before or the
morning of delivery and packed into bushel boxes. shares may be picked up
directly from the farm in Dracut or from one of our remote cluster
locations. If you are interested in having shares delivered to your town,
inquire about coordinating a cluster where you live or work.
The Vegetable Share combines a selection from over 70 locally-grown
traditional and ethnic vegetables to offer a farm share that is as diverse
as the farmers that produce it. June to October $550
The Vegetable Share with Fruit combines the Vegetable share above
with
locally grown berries, melons, tree fruit and more. June to October $710
A separate Winter Share extends the CSA season through December with
monthly distributions of cold hardy vegetables and storage crops. October to
December $ 75 $50 shareholder membership in the World PEAS CSA helps cover
operational costs including transportation, packing and administration. Members receive
a vegetable reference guide, free admission to New Entry sponsored field
trainings and events and access to the pick-your-own garden.
Farms that list their CSA operations
here should be certified organic, or should have signed the sustainable
growers affidavit, available in the NOFA/Mass Organic Food Guide. To view
the affidavit on the farmers listing application click here.
