The 2nd Annual Massachusetts Organic Gardening Workshop Day
Was held on April 18, 2009 in 13 different sites around Massachusetts.
There were roughly 200 people who attended these workshops among the different sites. Participants learned basic organic gardening skills to apply to their own gardens.

This Spring, just as it comes time to plant the garden, NOFA/Mass presents our
second annual Statewide Spring Organic Gardening Day. On April 18, there will
be organic gardening workshops in every region of the state. Growing our own food is an
excellent way to save money, lessen our carbon footprint, improve our health, and connect with neighbors and nature. Isn’t now a good time to learn skills that will help you plant a garden and make it productive throughout
the year?
Topics that will be covered at these workshops:
- Starting garden beds
- Seed Starting
- Organic soil fertility

- Organic soil amendments
- Mulches and cover crops
- Weeds, disease and pests
|
- What to plant when
- Crop spacing
- Succession cropping
|

These workshops are all being led by experienced gardening educators, and they are intended to meet the tremendous resurgence of energy and action for backyard and community gardening. In addition to explaining and demonstrating some key steps that can empower to you start your own garden, these workshops provide a great opportunity for you to come forth with your questions about beginning the process of gardening. Whether you are a complete newcomer to gardening or you just feel that you could use some brushing up on growing skills and concepts, these workshops are for you.
Full refunds for workshop registrations will be issued if at least 10 days notice is given, otherwise when practically possible to do so. Pre-registration is requested, but on-site registration is available. Scholarships are available for those who need them. Reduced group rates are also available. Please ask! Boston/North Shore
A) City Natives, 30 Edgewater Dr., Mattapan, MA, Time: 9am-12pm
- Jean-Claude Bourrut of Serving Ourselves Farm manages a vocational organic farm program for homeless men and women.
B) Natick Community Organic Farm (NCOF), 117 Eliot St., South Natick, Time: 10am-12pm
- Lynda Simkins is director and farm manager of NCOF, where she does food-based education.
C) First Parish Church of Newbury, 20 High Rd., Newbury, MA, Time: 9am-12pm
- Rita Wollmering and Brooke Finn run the The HERB FARMacy in Salisbury, MA, where they grow both vegetables and herbs.
Southeast Mass.
D) Soule Homestead Education Center, 46 Soule St., Middleboro, MA, Time: 9am-12pm
- Frank Albani manages Soule Homestead Education Center, and has been growing for market for 13 years.
E) Holly Hill Farm, 236 Jerusalem Rd, Cohassett, MA, Time: 9am-12pm
- Hannah Hobbs and Ben Wolbach are farm managers at Holly Hill Farm where they also teach agricultural education programs.
Central Mass.
F) Community Garden at the Arboretum, next to Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital, 189 May St., Worcester, MA), Time: 9am-12pm
- Julie Rawson is co-owner of Many Hands Organic Farm, and executive director of NOFA/Mass. She specializes in soil fertility, season extension, and intensive planting systems.
G) Pausam's Garden, 152 Valley Road, Barre, MA, Time: 9am-12pm
- Santo DeMauro is a pioneering backyard gardener, planting new raised beds each year, and enhancing soil fertility, while minimizing insect and disease pressures. The workshop site is also his home.
H) Noonday Farm, 96 Windsor Rd., Winchendon Springs, MA, Time: 9am-12pm
- Beth Ingham been farming organically for 18 years, using a no till raised bed garden system, and a greenhouse for multi-season growing. The workshop site is also her home.
Western Mass.
I) Mittineague Park, at the corner of Westfield Street and Fife Lane, near 100 Churchill Road, West Springfield, MA, Time: 9am-12pm.
- Kristin Brennan is an urban homesteader and coordinator of NOFA/Mass' Gardening the Community program in Springfield, MA. This event is being carried out in collaboration with the Immigrant and Refugee Agriculture Initiative of Lutheran Social Services. This workshop will be translated simultaneously from English into Nepali, Russian, and Karen/Burmese by staff members of Lutheran Social Services.
J) Keller Farm, 28 Cold Brook Rd. Wendell, MA, Time: 1-4pm
- Nina Keller is a longtime gardener/farmer. Along with crops, she raises cows and chickens. The workshop site is also her home. (Please follow these directions instead of getting internet directions).
K) Crabapple Farm, 100 Bryant Street, Chesterfield, MA, Time: 9am-12pm
- Ed Stockman is an an agro-biologist and the retired NOFA/Mass extension educator for NOFA/Mass. Tevis Robertson-Goldberg runs Crabapple Farm.
L) Nutrition Center, 94 West Ave, Great Barrington, MA, (This is a new location) Time: 9am-12pm
- Dominic Palumbo runs Moon in The Pond Farm, and manages a diverse organic garden. He emphasizes time and energy saving tricks and tips.
M) Presentation starts at West Side Neighborhood Resource Council, 314 Columbus Avenue, Pittsfield, MA. Then moves 2.5 blocks to West Side Farm Project, at Southeast corner of Robins and Bradford, across from 265 Bradford St, Time: 9am-12pm
- Ruth Green owns Green Arts Garden Design and is a Certified Horticulturalist and Accredited Organic Land Care Professional in Monterey, Massachusetts.
