NOFA/Mass Nutrient Density Resource Page
Nutrient density is a quality goal that is actively sought after in the biological approach to farming. It refers the nutritional content per volume of food we eat. There's not any one product that automatically delivers nutrient density, but rather a set of growing principles that enable growers to realize it.
Other benefits - in addition to better nutrition - include better yield and taste, less diseases and insect pressure, and overcoming problems of soil erosion and compaction. Achieving these ends starts by managing the soil so that it contains sufficient biologically available minerals in ratios appropriate for feeding the fungal, bacterial and other soil life communities that are in symbiotic relationships with crop plants.
Nutrient density can be achieved through means that are entirely consistent with organic process standards. NOFA/Mass offers numerous educational workshops to help growers of all sizes improve the nutrient density of their crops.
