Certified Organic Vegetable, Fruit, and Flower Farm
Hutchins Farm is seeking experienced and energetic candidates for our Farmstand Manager position for the 2025 season.
Hutchins Farm is one of the oldest certified organic vegetable, fruit, and cut flower operations in Massachusetts. Organic since 1973, Hutchins grows over 40 acres of vegetables, about an acre of small fruit, half an acre of cut flowers, and 4 acres of apples. We sell our produce directly to consumers at our farm stand in Concord, MA, and at three weekly farmers’ markets, with a small amount of sales to local restaurants.
The Farmstand Manager will work under the direction of the Business Manager to ensure our busy farmstand is inviting and welcoming for customers. The Farmstand Manager will lead members of the farmstand crew in the set up, running and closing of the stand, assisting the Business Manager to ensure that all crew tasks are completed efficiently and correctly, while maintaining a positive and supportive work environment for crewmembers.
The Farmstand Manager will be responsible for:
- Leading the farmstand crew in daily set up and closing of the stand, ringing up sales, making and maintaining displays, stocking, grading and packing produce for sale, helping with the wash and prep of vegetables, and other tasks as needed, all the while ensuring that tasks are completed correctly, efficiently, and safely with attention to Hutchins’ standards.
- Keeping the sales and farm stand clean and inviting, maintaining the exterior of the farm stand and herb garden in neat order, keeping the stock rooms/coolers orderly and clean
- Maintaining food safety records.
- Training new crewmembers, including teaching them proper set up techniques, vegetable handing, and customer service skills.
- Working with the Business Manger to prioritize tasks, bearing in mind daily retail needs, crop issues, weather, and other pertinent factors.
- Communicating with the field crew and other managers about the daily harvest to ensure proper display set up.
- Communicating and clarifying to farmstand staff any pertinent information from the Business Manager or other managers about changes in produce availability or crop issues, or any other information that needs to be communicated to the customers.
- Keep track of farmstand supply inventory and let managers know when running low.
- Coordinating farmstand crew lunch breaks.
- Maintain a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere in the farm stand.
- Maintaining a safe work environment, including reinforcing Hutchins Farm’s policies as laid out in the employee handbook.
Schedule:
- The Farmstand Manager position is full-time (5 days) starting at the very end of May through the end of October. Exact start day will depend on the circumstances of the season, weather, and the requirements of the farm. Weekend work early in May is possible if desired by the applicant.
- Starting in June working one weekend day a week is required. (A typical schedule might be Tuesday-Saturday) Weekends are our busiest days. The farmstand is closed on Mondays.
- In the early part of the season (May through Mid-June) the Farmstand Manager may be occasionally working alone. Starting in Mid-June as the selection of produce increases there may be one crew member working under the manager. This may increase to up to four crew members at a time as the season goes on.
- Daily hours are 10am (or 10:30am early in the season) to 6:15/6:30pm with up to an hour unpaid for lunch.
Qualifications:
- Experience in customer service and excellent customer service skills
- Excellent communications and time management skills
- Ability to quickly pick up new concepts and techniques, and then teach them to others
- Basic understanding of computer technology and ipads – use of square or ebt apps is a plus but not required.
- Ability to lift 50lbs repeatedly
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Friendly, helpful demeanor
- An interest in local and organic food
- Comfortable working in a variety of weather conditions – while the farmstand is enclosed, it does not have heat or air conditioning
- Ability to work well in a team atmosphere
Compensation starts at $20/hr, with a $0.50 per-hour-worked year-end bonus contingent on completion of the season, plus free vegetables from the farm. Paid sick time accrual starts on the first day of employment. Housing is not available. Reliable transportation to and from the farm is required (we are not accessible by public transit)
